Japan formally begins recruiting Nepali workers under G2G agreement

Kathmandu, September 3

Japan has formally begun preparations to recruit Nepali workers under a government-to-government agreement that the two countries signed in March this year. In the first phase, it will recruit nursing caregivers.

The Japanese Ministry of Labour, Health, and Welfare recently published a schedule of examination that the Nepalis interested to go to Japan to work as nursing caregivers have to pass. The test will be conducted on October 27-29, November 5-7 and November 12-14. Only 1,000 applications will be accepted for the test on the ‘first come, first serve’ basis.

The applications will be collected online, but the Japanese government is yet to finalise the procedure for the application. The Tokyo government has not yet revealed where the exams will take place. It has not specified any qualification required to take the test.

The test will have two components–nursing care skill evaluation examination and nursing caregiver Japanese language evaluation examination. An applicant has to pay Yen 1,000 for each of the components. Both the examinations will be computer-based.

Earlier, the Japanese government had decided to recruit workers from various Asian countries such as Nepal, China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam after it experienced a shortfall in labour supply. According to the reports, Japan plans to employ 345,000 foreign workers in its 14 industrial areas.
