Janakpur’s ex-mayor dies of Covid-19, Province 1 lawmaker Shrestha is also infected

Janakpurdham/Biratnagar, August 12

A former mayor of Janakpur, Krishna Giri, has died of Covid-19 on Tuesday night. The 72-year-old politician-turned-hotelier was undergoing treatment at Nepal Mediciti Hospital in Kathmandu for the past three weeks.

He was airlifted from Janakpur last month after he had shortness of breath. Giri’s son Dr Santosh Giri informs his father was also suffering from hypertension and heart problem. The coronavirus infection in him was confirmed only after he was admitted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Province 1 Assembly member Kusum Kumari Shrestha has contracted Covid-19. Shrestha, who represents a Dhankuta constituency in the assembly, is currently residing in Itahari of Sunsari.

She is the second high-profile official in the province to have contracted Covid-19. Earlier, Chief Attorney Chuda Mani Acharya was also confirmed to have coronavirus.
