Kathmandu, June 21
The 12th International Yoga Day is being celebrated across Nepal and around the world under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” This theme highlights the importance of yoga for people of all ages. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), yoga is a fantastic practice for promoting healthy ageing, as it nurtures various skills that help individuals stay active, independent, and engaged as they grow older.
The WHO explains that through a blend of gentle movements, stretching, breathing exercises, and mindfulness, yoga boosts balance, flexibility, strength, and mobility, while also enhancing mental health and relieving stress. Since yoga can be adapted to suit different fitness levels and health conditions, it offers a welcoming way for many older adults to maintain their physical and emotional well-being.
These benefits align perfectly with several goals of the WHO Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030), which include promoting independence, reducing fall risks, enhancing quality of life, and supporting person-centred health and well-being approaches. Yoga, an ancient practice with roots in ancient oriental knowledge developed in the Himalayan regions, encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. The word ‘yoga’ comes from Sanskrit, meaning to join or unite, symbolising the connection between body and mind. Today, it is practised in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.
Recognising its global importance, the United Nations officially declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, through resolution 69/131. This day aims to raise awareness about the countless benefits of practising yoga. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea of an International Day of Yoga during the 69th General Assembly of the United Nations, emphasising that yoga is vital for everyone, for all time. After receiving support from the then Prime Minister of Nepal, Sushil Koirala, the proposal gained backing from permanent member states of the United Nations, including the European Union, and now it has gained widespread popularity in all regions across the globe.
