House directs govt not to implement decision to add Nepal Police AIG post

Kathmandu, December 9

The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee in the House of Representatives has directed the government not to implement a recent cabinet decision to add one position of additional inspector general to the Nepal Police.

Last month, the cabinet had amended the police organogram increasing the number of AIG positions to four. As reported, Deputy Prime Minister Ishwar Pokharel had interfered into the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs to make the decision so that his relative Bishwa Raj Pokharel could take that role.

On the way to implementing the decision, DIG Pokharel has already been recommended for the position. If Pokharel is promoted now, he will be the sole contender for the chief of Nepal Police when incumbent Shailesh Thapa Kshetri retires in May 2022.

However, a meeting of the House panel today directed Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa not to implement the decision to add the position now. In response, Thapa said he would convey the decision to the concerned authority.
