Heavy rain likely in several provinces today

Kathmandu, August 17

Monsoon winds currently affect the entire country. The monsoon’s low-pressure trough runs roughly through its average position in the east, while in the west it sits north of its usual position, closer to northern Nepal.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, this pattern is bringing rain to western Nepal, with Baitadi, Kanchanpur, Kailali, and Bardiya recently seeing extremely heavy rainfall, and Syangja and Nawalpur also recording very high totals.

This afternoon, moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at many hilly and mountainous locations in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces, along with a few hilly and mountainous spots in Koshi and Bagmati. The same kind of moderate rain is expected across many Terai locations in Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim, throughout Madhesh province, and at a few Terai spots in Koshi and Bagmati. Heavier rain is possible in hilly areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim, as well as at a few Terai locations in Lumbini and Sudurpashchim, with one or two spots in Lumbini’s Terai belt likely to see heavy rain specifically.

Tonight, rain and snow accompanied by thunder and lightning are expected at a few mountainous and hilly locations. In contrast, moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at a few Terai locations in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim, along with a few spots in Madhesh province.
