Guthi Bill controversy: House panel to consult experts

Police use water cannons to disperse a protesting crowd, who were demonstrating against the Guthi Bill, in Kathmandu, on Sunday, June 9, 2019.

Kathmandu, June 14

A committee in Parliament has decided to consult stakeholders and experts over recently surfaced dissatisfaction with the Guthi Bill that the government recently registered in Parliament.

The Agriculture, Cooperative and Natural Resource Committee made a decision to consult the stakeholders from the next week.

The committee also decided to invite experts Keshav Badal, Jagat Basnet, Krishna Paudel, Jagat Deuba, Janak Raj Joshi, Mahendra Shrestha and Prakash Joshi to a meeting this Sunday.

Stakeholders and local activists have been protesting the bill recently registered in the Federal Parliament claiming it would keep traditional community organisations called ‘guthi’ and properties owned by them under the control of government. They have accused the government of trying to create a new place to recruit their cadres through the bill.

Meanwhile, the meeting also decided to hold discussions on Environment Protection Bill and Land Act Amendment Bill, according to the committee chair Purna Kumari Subedi.
