Kathmandu, March 23
The government on Monday formed a team to recommend suggestions on various issues related to the Guthi tradition and the land the local communities have in the name of guthis.
The government had registered a new Guthi Bill last year. However, owing to widespread protests including those led by local Newars of Kathmandu, the government had withdrawn it later. Following that, the government is preparing to formulate a new integrated land law, which will also incorporate provisions regarding the guthi land.
To provide suggestions and recommendations on the issue, a committee led by Kathmandu-8 House of Representatives member Jeevan Ram Shrestha has been formed. The team has been mandated to submit its report to the Ministry of Land Management within one month of its first meeting.
The committee has been told to consult stakeholders such as guthi members, people’s representatives, civil society organisations and protestors to prepare its report.
