Kathmandu, February 21

After stopping registering and renewing associations of entrepreneurs which were managing the operation of public transport vehicles till last year, the government is mulling over forming a dedicated authority to manage the sector.

Recently, a Cabinet meeting approved the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport’s proposal to draft a Transport Authority Bill for the establishment.

It has been learned that the Ministry is preparing to follow the public transport system of Vienna of Austria for Nepal also.

Earlier, the Ministry had formed a task force under the leadership of joint secretary Gopal Sigdel to suggest modalities and it has already submitted its report, recommending the authority’s establishment.

It is stated that the authority will address all concerns raised by entrepreneurs regarding accident insurance, route permit, treatment of the injured and welfare fund among others.

After the formation of the authority, all transporters should register under the regulatory body.
