Kathmandu, August 29

The government is preparing to form a committee to downsize the federal workforce. The budget announcement for the current fiscal year had promised to downsize the workforce.

Basanta Adhikari, a joint secretary at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, says the ministry is planning to establish the committee under the leadership of a former secretary. It will also consist of representatives of all concerned ministries.

As the implementation of the proposal will affect the government’s financial liabilities, the ministry has forwarded the proposal to the Ministry of Finance for its consent.

According to government records, there are 52,062 staff positions in the federal workforce, but around 7,000 positions are vacant.
