All major Nepali and English newspapers published from Kathmandu Valley on Monday have given the top priority to the health condition of medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC as his fast-unto-death completed 24 full days by Sunday evening. On the other hand, two top leaders of the ruling Nepal Communist Party have made remarks against Dr KC and the main opposition Nepali Congress for blocking the government from implementing a new medical education law; and their statements have also received top priority.

Few other issues from political, sociocultural and financial spheres have been featured on the front pages of major Nepali and English dailies published from the capital today.

Kantipur, Annapurna Post, Nepal Samacharpatra, Rajdhani, The Kathmandu Post and Republica have reported in their lead stories that fasting activist Dr Govinda KC agreed to undergo blood checkups at the request of his 80-year-old mother as his health has deteriorated further.

Rajdhani reports that the octogenarian woman had visited her son for 45 minutes yesterday, asking doctors if there was anything wrong in his health. Then, she told Dr KC to undergo the examination “as the country needs him.”

Doctors attending to him have claimed that anything can happen to him anytime, reports Kantipur, adding levels of blood pressure, potassium, white blood cells and sugar and oxygen in blood have significantly decreased in his body.

Murder accused recommended for provincial state minister

Kantipur and Republica report on their front pages that the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal has recommended a murder accused leader for the position of state minister in Province 2 government.

Abhiram Sharma, who was accused of killing police head constable Thaman BK in Mahottari during a clash in September 2015, has been recommended for the position, according to reports.

The Supreme Court has already ordered police to arrest Sharma on the charge of killing BK, Republica reports, adding police have also already issued an arrest warrant in compliance with the court order.

Meanwhile, the recommendation has fuelled dissatisfaction within the party, the report adds.

Joshee accused of spending Rs 9 million in son’s wedding

Of five complaints filed against Acting Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee as he is going to face a parliamentary hearing for the position of Chief Justice this week, a complainant has accused him of spending as much as Rs 9 million in his son’s wedding, reports Nepal Samacharpatra in a three-column story.

The complainant has further argued that he spent Rs 2 million in the son’s engagement.

‘Teacher’s torture’ kills Dolakha kid

The lead story in Rajdhani says a six-year-old child from Charikot of Dolakha district died after his teacher beat him up. Sudeep Basnet breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu on Sunday, the report adds, he was beaten by his teacher Dawa K Sherpa at the classroom around one month ago.

Modi visit cost Nepal Rs 63 million

Karobar reports in a two-column story that Nepal spent Rs 63 million and 373,277 during the Nepal visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May.

The money was spent through the Province 2 Chief Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, district administration offices, units of Nepal Police, Armed Police and Nepal Police Force, according to the report.

Meanwhile, some current and former officials have commented that the expense is quite high.

Govt to provide jobs for at least four months for unemployed

The government is preparing to launch a new anti-unemployment prgoramme from this fiscal year, under which all unemployed persons of the financially active population (16-60 years) of the country will be given jobs for at least four months, according to Naya Patrika.

The government has promised that it will provide an allowance equal to their pay for 60 days if they cannot get the job.
