Update: Province 2 is named Madhes with Janakpur as its capital

The Province 2 Assembly has decided to name the province as Madhes. The name was decided through voting held on Monday.

Speaker Saroj Kumar Yadav announced 80 members of the assembly voted in favour of naming Province 2, Madhesh as it is more than two-thirds of the assembly’s current strength (104), as required by the constitution, to decide the name and the capital. Following that, other proposals for different names turned irrelevant, he added.


Province 2 names Janakpur as its capital

The Province 2 Assembly has decided to retain the temporary capital of Janakpur as its permanent capital also.

A meeting of the provincial legislative held on Monday voted for the proposal for Janakpur as the capital.

Speaker Saroj Kumar Yadav announced 78 members of the assembly voted for the proposal, and it is more than two-thirds of the assembly’s current strength (104), as required by the constitution, to decide the name and the capital.

Some other lawmakers had proposed to name Birgunj as the capital, but Janakpur received the required votes.

Meanwhile, the assembly is likely to decide the province’s name also during the next meeting later today.

It has already been more than six years since the constitution’s promulgation, but Province 1 and Province 2 are yet to find their own names for them. Five other provinces have already decided their names and provincial capitals.
