From the Kathmandu Press: Friday, February 16, 2018

All major broadsheet dailies published in Kathmandu on Friday have given priority to reports on Oli’s appointment as the new Prime Minister. Similarly, the rift in Left Alliance over the proposed new party’s ideology has also made it to the front pages. Here’s a summary of news published on today’s front pages:

Oli is Nepal’s new Prime Minister

Naya Patrika says Oli has the backing of 174 MPs in the Lower House, which is well above the number required to secure a simple majority in the 275-seat Parliament. The paper says Oli, who had to resign 18 months ago after the Maoist Centre pulled out from his government, is now back with the support of the same party. The paper says that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh was the first foreign head of government to congratulate Oli on being elected to the post. The Bangladeshi Prime Minister has even invited Oli for a visit to Dhaka. While the Indian and the Chinese ambassadors congratulated Oli during his oath-taking ceremony, the US ambassador took to Twitter to welcome the new Prime Minister.

The paper says 38 people have become Nepal’s Prime Minister so far. However, there have been numerous instances when a former Prime Minister has been appointed to the post.

Naya Patrika says Prime Minister Oli is likely to scrap the Deuba government’s decision to nominate three people to the National Assembly. The Deuba government has sent the names of three people to be appointed to the House, to the President. The President is yet to decide on the issue.

Kantipur reports that Prime Minister Oli, who had earlier hinted that his government would adopt a softer stance against ‘black money’, has clarified his position on the issue. He says that any measure the government will take to bring money from the informal sector to the formal sector, will not violate international norms. Oli says that money earned through illegal sales of weapons and narcotics and trafficking of persons will never be legalised.

Deuba to leave Baluwatar today

Naya Patrika says outgoing Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba will leave his Baluwatar quarters on Friday. Deuba announced his resignation on Thursday after the Election Commission submitted the final results of the parliamentary elections to the President.
