Eminent Persons’ Group meeting in Kathmandu, Nepal-India relations in focus

The first meeting of the Eminent Persons’ Group is taking place in Kathmandu on Monday.

The group comprising Nepali and Indian intellectuals will have to prepare a report after studying different aspects of Nepal-India relations, including the 1950’s ‘Peace and Friendship Treaty.’

The meeting will last till Tuesday, preparing mutual agendas and the timeframe for fulfilling them. India had picked its members February 20, 2016.

During Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s visit to India, the two sides had named members for the group and agreed to hold the group’s first meeting in Kathmandu.

The group has former foreign minister Bhesh Bahadur Thapa as coordinator and former minister Nilambar Acharya, lawmaker Rajan Bhatatrai and former secretary and former CIAA chief commissioner Surya Nath Upadhyaya as Nepal’s representatives.

The Indian side comprises lawmaker Bhagat Singh Kosiyari as coordinator and former ambassador Jayanta Prasad, Professor BC Upreti and Professor Mahendra P Lama as members.

As per the mandate, the two sides will have to prepare and submit a joint document to their respective governments.

Nepal and India had agreed to constitute an EPG during Nepal Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s India visit on October 20-23, 2011.

During India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Nepal visit on July 2, 2014, Nepal and India had agreed on forming an EPG comprising four members each with a tenure of two years. Nepal had picked its members about six months ago whereas India had followed suit about four and a half months months ago.
