Electricity from Kathmandu sewage ‘soon’

Kathmandu, January 28

If a plan made by the government works, Kathmandu will have a reliable solution to its sewage management problem soon. Besides, the project will also produce electricity, officials claim.

The amount of electricity produced, however, will not be much big, and it cannot be traded commercially, they maintain.

The Project Implementation Directorate of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited is establishing sewage processing centres in five places of the Valley and two of them will soon produce electricity.

The KUKL-PID spokesperson Lila Prasad Dhakal says the processing centres will be established in Guhyeshwari and Gokarna of Kathmandu, Sallaghari of Bhaktapur, and Kodku and Dhobighat of Lalitpur. Centres in Guhyeshwari and Dhobighat will be equipped with electricity generation plants.

Dhakal says sewage from residences will not be directly sent to any stream or river of the Valley after the establishment of processing centres.

Therefore, larger pipes are being installed in parallel to streams and rivers and they will be later connected to individual houses, according to him.

Then, the sewage will be processed to turn it into gas, which will produce power, Dhakal informs, adding, that electricity will be used to operate sewage treatment centres themselves.

It is expected that centres in Guhyeshwari and Dhobighat will produce 240 kilowatt and 500 kilowatt power respectively.

A Korean company had carried out a feasibility study to conclude that power generation in Sallaghari and Kodku will be impossible owing to their small scale, according to the official.
