Curfew extended in Birgunj until 6 pm

Janakpurdham, January 6

The curfew imposed in Birgunj has been extended until 6 pm on Tuesday. The local administration enforced the curfew from Monday evening after tensions escalated between the two communities over religious and social issues.

The curfew, initially imposed from 6 pm on Monday to 8 am on Tuesday, was first extended until 1 pm. It has now been further extended until 6 pm, according to the District Administration Office, Parsa.

Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal said the curfew has been enforced across the Birgunj Metropolitan City area, prohibiting all forms of gatherings, meetings, rallies, and demonstrations. The restricted area stretches from Bus Park, Nagwa, and Inarwa in the east; the Sirsiya River in the west; Gandak Chowk in the north; and Shankaracharya Gate in the south.

The administration has urged residents not to step outside their homes except for essential purposes. Those who must go out have been requested to coordinate with nearby security personnel or call the emergency number 100.

During the curfew period, security personnel have been instructed to facilitate the movement of essential services, including ambulances, fire engines, hearses, vehicles of health workers, journalists, tourist vehicles, vehicles belonging to human rights organisations and diplomatic missions, and air passengers travelling based on valid flight tickets.

Two communities have been staging continuous protests in Birgunj since Sunday over religious and social issues. The demonstrations have led to growing unrest in the city.
