Less than two weeks after the government resumed distributing filled LPG cooking gas cylinders to the market, consumers in the Kathmandu Valley and several other districts have once again begun facing a shortage of cooking gas.
Unable to obtain LPG, many consumers have been forced to visit dealers and suppliers in person and leave their empty cylinders in long queues.
On Sunday, large crowds of people were seen lining up at the Nepal Gas depot in the Balaju Industrial Area. Consumers say they now have to wait for weeks just to exchange a single gas cylinder.
Earlier this year, after a severe gas shortage in the market, the Nepal Oil Corporation introduced the sale of half-filled LPG cylinders (7.1 kg) from late Falgun 2082 (March 2026) to ease supply constraints.
However, after the distribution of filled cylinders resumed, dealers say demand for LPG surged sharply, leading to the current shortage.
While gas depots across the country are witnessing overwhelming crowds of consumers, the Nepal Oil Corporation continues to insist that there is no shortage of LPG in the market.
Students and small households with only one gas cylinder have been hit the hardest by the shortage, as they are left without a cooking fuel while waiting for replacements.
