CIAA files corruption case against former APF chief Basnet

Kathmandu, February 29

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority on Monday filed corruption cases against former IGP of the Armed Police Force, Sanat Kumar Basnet, and six other police officials at the Special Court.

It called authorities to recover around Rs 90.15 million from Basnet, pointing that Basnet had indulged in irregularities in the name of making arrangements for supply of goods to APF units during his two-year-odd stint as the APF chief that started in April 2009.

The CIAA has also taken APF inspector Bin Bahadur Thapa to the court in the same case. The anti-corruption agency said it has pressed charges against APF inspector Manu Hira Mahat and Shiva Bahadur Karki, demanding recouping of Rs 73 lakh and Rs 23 lakh, respectively, from the two.

It has accused APF inspector Nil Bahadur Shrestha and Lekh Bahadur Khatri of embezzling Rs 1.06 crore, and demanded recovery of Rs 83 lakh from inspector Devendra Kumar Shrestha.

All these APF officials, according to the CIAA, had taken money by preparing fake bills to show they had supplied goods to APF units. These officials had claimed that they had transported goods to the subordinate units using Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines cargo services, according to the CIAA.
