Kathmandu, March 30

Once again, the bird flu disease has been found in some chickens, ducks and quails owned by farmers in the Kathmandu valley.

Officials say they recently destroyed 1,500 fowls in the Nakhkhu area of Lalitpur in their bid to control its spread further. They also destroyed around 1,000 chicken eggs and 335 kgs of feed.

A real-time PCR test conducted at the Central Veterinary Laboratory had confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus in the samples collected from the area, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

Following the confirmation of the infection, the affected area has been disinfected and needful safety measures have been taken.

The disease was seen in the Tarakeshwar municipality of Kathmandu in January and February, but it was taken under control immediately.
