Chitwan, June 1

Ballot papers allegedly torn by some Maoist cadres on Sunday are being counted in Bharatpur Metropolitan City on Thursday.

The Election Commission on Wednesday had directed election officials to first determine the number of torn ballot papers before deciding the next move in a bid to end the impasse.

The counting is underway under a tight guard of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force.

Chief District Officer, Chief Returning Officer and returning officers, security officials and political party representatives also went to the counting venue.

As many as 46 persons have been involved in the counting.

The CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre have been accusing each other for the misconduct.

The Congress-Maoist alliance and the UML were neck and neck in the mayoral competition before the voting was halted.
