Kathmandu, August 13

Attorney General Raman Kumar Shrestha has finally tendered his resignation from the office after Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba directed him to quit.

Talking to Onlinekhabar, Shrestha said he submitted his resignation to the PM today upon his request.

The lawmaker loyal to ruling CPN-Maoist Centre party was appointed to the position by former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

It is customary that the Attorney General quits after the change in government. However, Shrestha had not resigned even after the election of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to the position of Prime Minister.

Shrestha had claimed he was holding the position upon a request from Deuba. Lawyers close to Deuba’s party, however, had been pressurising the PM to sack Shrestha and appoint someone close to own party.

The Attorney General is the legal advisor to the Prime Minister and the government and s/he can hold the position as long as the Prime Minister wants him/her to be, according to Article 157 of the constitution.
