Air pollution rising across Nepal with further increase expected

Kathmandu, November 9

Air pollution has been increasing across various parts of the country, including the Kathmandu Valley, and is expected to rise further in the coming days.

According to information published on the Department of Environment’s website, as of 9 am today, the highest level of air pollution was recorded in Surkhet, where the pollution level reached 170 PPM.

Bhaktapur follows as the second most polluted city, with a recorded level of 132 PPM.

Other areas with high pollution levels include Deukhuri in Dang (124 PPM), Shankhapark in Kathmandu (123 PPM), and Khumaltar in Lalitpur (105 PPM).

At Shankhapark, Kathmandu, pollution levels have risen sharply  from 73 PPM yesterday to 123 PPM as of 9 am today.

Data from the Department of Environment indicates that pollution levels are projected to increase further in the coming days.

Experts say that in the absence of any significant rainfall system and with air pollution levels surging in neighboring India, polluted air could drift into Nepal.

Low rainfall during the dry season, stagnant air movement, burning of agricultural residues, and environmentally unfriendly construction activities are considered the main causes of rising air pollution.
