After protest, Province 2 govt revises media bill

Province 2 Assembly, Janakpurdham

Janakpurdham, May 17

The Province 2 government has withdrawn its proposal to fine journalists upto Rs 10 million.

Earlier, the government had registered a bill to manage media on Thursday, and it had proposed that journalists who publish or broadcast contents jeopardising the province’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and nationality have to pay a fine from Rs 5 million to Rs 10 million.

But, Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Gyanendra Kumar Yadav on Friday issued a statement informing he would withdraw the provision.

Claiming the proposal was inserted ‘by mistake’, he said the bill would be revised in consultation with journalists and experts.

Yadav assured that the government was committed to improving quality of journalism and facilities to journalists.
