After CMC’s exit, govt undecided on Melamchi

File: A tunnel under the Melamchi Water Supply Project

Kathmandu, February 6

The two weeks’ time that the government gave to the Italian construction firm, CMC, to return to the Melamchi Water Supply Project has been over.

However, the government is not decided on how it will complete the ambitious project expected to quench the thirst of Kathmanduites.

After the Italian company left the work halfway, putting forth various conditions, the government on January 19 had issued a letter of termination giving two weeks as the last chance.

The Melamchi Water Supply Development Board under the Ministry of Water Supply was expected to hold a meeting on Tuesday to make a decision about the next steps. The board, however, could not convene the meeting.

It has been learned that the decision is delayed as officials of the Ministry are divided over the next steps.

Some sources, on the other hand, claim the Ministry deployed a mission to Thailand to hold talks with the CMC last Friday; and this is the reason behind the delay.
