3 glacial lakes found at 5,350m in Humla avalanche study

A government research team deployed to investigate the recent avalanche in Tilgaon, Namkha Rural Municipality-6 of Humla, has discovered three glacial lakes at an altitude of 5,350 meters.

According to senior divisional geologist Shiv Kumar Baskota from the Department of Mines and Geology, the team identified three lakes at the site where only two were previously known to exist.

The study team also includes senior divisional engineer Sushil Kumar Shrestha from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, and hydrologist Souhadra Joshi from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The avalanche, which occurred on the night of May 14, displaced 32 people from 18 households in Tilgaon. It also caused damage to a micro-hydropower project, drinking water and irrigation infrastructure, a wooden bridge, and around 400 ropani of arable land.
