Birendra glacial lake restored to its usual state after avalanche

Gorkha, April 22

The Birendra glacial lake at Samagaun, Chumanubri Rural Municipality-1 in Northern Gorkha has gradually restored to its normal state. The lake was destabilised after a huge avalanche in Mt Manaslu hit it on Sunday morning, leading to an overflow.

According to Bhola Dahal, the Chief District Officer of Gorkha, the excess water flowed into the Bhudhigandaki river after the avalanche hit the lake. However, it did not cause significant physical and human losses as there are no settlements near the lake. Nevertheless, the increased water flow in the Budhigandaki river washed away a wooden bridge on the way to Samdo from Samagaun, half an hour’s trek from the lake.

“The lake is stable and the avalanche has stopped,” said Dahal.
