Jhapa, January 4

CPN-UML senior leader and former prime minister Jhala Nath Khanal says he will accept the position of the country’s new president if his party and the left alliance decide him to elect to the top post.

He, however, maintains that he will not bow down to anyone begging for the position.

While the left alliance is preparing to lead the new government and the presidential election is due to be held within next two months, media reports have claimed that Khanal is lobbying for his election to the top position.

“The president’s role is very significant. Therefore, I will not reject the offer,” Khanal tells journalists in Biratmod of Jhapa today, “But, I will not bow down to anyone begging the position.”

Khanal says his personality has an active nature; hence, he will continue to be active in politics notwithstanding his election to the top position.

“Even if I am elected the president, I will not stay silent. I am not in politics for silence.”

In another context, Khanal says discussions are underway between his party and the CPN-Maoist Centre to conclude the unification process at the earliest.
