A recent study has concluded that Nepali media have failed to accord sufficient priority to youth and issues concerning them, suggesting ways of improvement.
Yuwalaya, a youth-led organisation, on Friday published the report of its one-year media monitoring, which says, “Big media houses’ coverage of youth issues is quite encouraging. However, some newspapers’ coverage of the issues is below the level of satisfaction. All the newspapers should consider youth as their potential audience group and accord a high priority to their issues.”
The organisation had studies reports about youth issues including gender empowerment and social inclusion, disaster risk reduction and climate change, livelihood, young people’s participation, sexual and reproductive health rights and child marriage published in 10 major newspapers of Nepal from July 2016 to June 2017.
The report has also suggested that media do not centre themselves in the capital and other major cities of the country after observing that contents from urban areas are getting priority.
“But, they also suggest that youth residing and working in the capital as well as other major cities have a greater responsibility to make youth of other regions aware about their rights and responsibilities and take all of them together in the development process,” the report reads.
