Gorkha, October 11
Five people have gone missing after a landslide triggered by flooding in the Ungilung Khola in Chum Nubri Rural Municipality-6, northern Gorkha.
According to the District Police Office, the missing people are Sonam Lama, 65, his wife Lakpa Thorma Lama, 59, Som Bhuti Lama, 66, Karma Lama, 68, and Ten Dorje Lama, 41. They are residents of Chumchet in Chum Nubri Rural Municipality-6 and had been staying in sheep sheds in the area.
DSP Rajkumar Shrestha said the landslide swept away four sheep sheds and around 150 livestock.
“There were four sheep sheds belonging to four families. All of them were swept away, and five people who were staying in the sheds are missing,” he said.
The landslide blocked the Ungilung Khola, triggering a mudflow in the Budhi Gandaki River when the blockage suddenly gave way. The Ungilung Khola flows into the Budhi Gandaki through the Syar Khola.
Assistant Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said search operations had been intensified to locate the missing people. A Nepal Army helicopter has also been deployed.
“We are also gathering information from downstream areas,” he said, adding that residents and police personnel were conducting searches alongside the helicopter operation.
