A pet dog trapped in the Budhigandaki flood in Gorkha has been rescued after 20 days. It had been stranded since October 11 in Jagat, Chumnubri Rural Municipality-3, in northern Gorkha.

On Friday, a rafting team from Dhading reached Jagat in Sirdibas and rescued the dog, in coordination with an organisation called Animal Nepal and the rural municipality.

“There were preparations to rescue it by helicopter yesterday,” said rural municipality chair Nima Lama. “But the helicopter could not fly because of the weather.”

He said the rafting team’s help was sought after the helicopter flight proved impossible.

The dog belonged to Kamal Karki, a resident of Jagat. It had been stranded on the Budhigandaki riverbank since the flood of October 11. The flood washed away Karki’s house and the bridge, leaving the dog stuck on the other side of the river.

“When news of the flood coming from upstream reached them, the residents crossed the bridge to this side. A little later, the flood swept away both the house and the bridge, and the dog was left on the other side,” said Ganesh Karki, a local of Jagat.

According to him, the flood washed away four houses in the area. Some goats were also trapped there, and efforts are underway to rescue them as well.
