A special committee of the National Assembly has sought detailed information from the government on damage and relief distribution in 49 wards affected by floods along the Bhotekoshi and Kaligandaki river corridors.

Committee chairperson Krishna Prasad Paudel said the committee had decided to seek a breakdown of the cash, food and other assistance distributed to each affected ward, stressing that parliamentary monitoring was necessary to ensure effective relief delivery.

The committee has suggested that ward chairpersons and technical personnel jointly prepare damage assessment records, authenticated by their signatures. It has also asked the government to compile ward- and municipality-level details of deaths, missing and displaced people, livestock losses, crop damage, communication facilities, schools and the situation of children.

According to Paudel, the committee will hold discussions through November 2 on disaster impacts, climate change, disaster risk reduction, agriculture, forests, biodiversity and watersheds. It will also consult relevant ministries on economic loss assessment, relief and rehabilitation budgets, and reconstruction financing.

The committee will discuss rescue and relief operations with security agencies and examine foreign tourist casualties, international cooperation and diplomatic coordination.

It will conduct on-site monitoring in flood-affected areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading from November 3 to 7.

The committee was formed to assess disaster impacts and recommend a roadmap for rehabilitation, reconstruction, risk reduction and climate justice.
