Kathmandu, August 13
The government of Nepal says at least 49 persons lost their lives to floods and landslides in various districts of Nepal in past three days.
Likewise, 17 persons are missing whereas 13 others have sustained injuries as of 1 pm today.
The Ministry of Home Affairs says 21 districts have been affected due to the disasters.
Total 305 houses have been destroyed and 80 livestock died in these districts.
Sunsari in eastern Nepal has recorded the highest death toll of eight. Five persons are missing and two are injured in this district.
Meanwhile, the government has formed a Central Command Post headed by Home Minister Janardan Sharma to coordinate among various government bodies to expedite rescue and relief works in the wake of recent disasters.
An emergency meeting called by the Home Minister today formed the panel.
The meeting also decided to ensure smooth suppl of daily essentials and operation of transportation vehicles and mobilise local level people’s representatives in disaster management works.
Around 5,600 Nepal Police personnel have been mobilised for the rescue works along with 1,700 Armed Police Forcr and 1,000 Nepali Army staff, according to the Home Ministry.
Health Ministry’s rapid response teams
The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division under the Ministry of Health has deployed rapid response teams to 18 districts to Terai in a bid to control infection of various waterborne diseases in the flood-hit area.
EDCD Chief Bhim Acharya says total 11 persons including specialists have been mobilised.
“Four rapid response teams have already left for Janakpur, Nepalgunj, Rautahat and Biratnagar,” he says, the teams have been provided with sufficient medicines and other needful medical equipment.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has directed all staff working under it not to take any leave until the next notice, postpone all formal prorgrammes like seminars and get mobilised in the disaster-hit areas.
