All schools of Kathmandu University shave been shut down on Thursday amid protests by employees and professors who are demanding that the administration fulfill its promises.

This is the first time that class have been obstructed at the university, where protestors routinely shut down offices of various departments, a university staffer said. “Protests have become a part of daily life at the university,” the staffer said adding that it is now hard to keep track of who is protesting against what.

According to the professors and employees’ union of the university, the latest round of protests has been organised to press the university to fulfill promises it made to its employees. Agitated employees have shut down the university’s School of Law, School of Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Management, School of Arts, School of Education, School of Medical Sciences and the office of the examination controller as well as all administrative offices.

The shutdown comes a day after agitated employees tried to padlock the university’s School of Medical Sciences, but were denied by police. The employees have demanded action against School of Sciences Dean Rajendra Koju and Assistant Dean Ramesh Makaju for trying to obstruct their protests. However, in a statement on Wednesday, the school said that patients at the hospital run by the school chased away some miscreants trying to create an ‘uneasy’ situation.

The university and the union signed an agreement in September last year. But the union argues that it has not been implemented yet.
