26 local govts yet to announce budget for new fiscal

Kathmandu, August 21

It has been one month and one week since the new fiscal year 2019/20 began. However, 26 local governments across Nepal are yet to announce their annual budget plan for the year.

The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration informs that only 727 of 753 local governments have announced their budget so far. It means 26 local units do not have any money to spend for this fiscal year.

Laws require the local units to announce the budget by June 25, around three weeks before the commencement of the new year.

All local units of Province 1 and Karnali have already announced their budget plans. Province 2 has the highest number of local units failing to announce the budget (20) followed by Province 3 (3). Likewise, one unit each in Gandaki, Province 5, and Sudurpaschim are yet to make the announcements.
