20,000 Nepalis abroad return home for Dashain in past 2 weeks

Nepali migrant workers, returning home amid the global Covid-19 crisis, arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport, in Kathmandu, in June 2020.

Kathmandu, October 20

Around 20,000 Nepalis have returned home from various countries, apparently for Dashain celebration, in the past two weeks.

Whereas around 94,000 Nepalis had returned to Nepal from various countries since the beginning of the lockdown to control the coronavirus spread in the country in March until 15 days ago, the number increased to 114,018 as of Sunday, according to government officials.

They expect the number of arrivals will cross the 25,000-mark by the day of Badadashain (Monday next week).

Most of these people returned from the Gulf countries, the Maldives, Japan, South Korea, and Turkey. Many of them have lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 crisis, according to Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister Rameshwar Raya Yadav.

Most of the migrant workers who have not lost their jobs are unlikely to come home this Dashain as the number of flights between the host countries and Nepal has decreased and many of them are occupied with the job-losing workers coming back home, according to the officials.
