The Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi flood caused nearly Rs 200 billion in damage to infrastructure alone, according to a government assessment.
According to the “Rasuwa-Bhotekoshi Flood 2083: Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment” report prepared by a government-formed team, the flood caused infrastructure damage worth Rs 172.34 billion. An estimated Rs 473.57 billion will be required to reconstruct the damaged infrastructure.
The energy sector, including hydropower projects and transmission lines, suffered the most serious damage at Rs 134.69 billion. An estimated Rs 390 billion will be required to rebuild the sector. Renewable energy infrastructure suffered damage worth Rs 560 million.
The flood caused an estimated Rs 22 billion in damage to roads, while more than Rs 55.18 billion will be required for reconstruction. Bridges suffered damage worth Rs 11.35 billion, with an estimated Rs 18.06 billion needed for reconstruction.
The telecommunications sector suffered damage worth Rs 620 million and is estimated to require nearly Rs 1 billion for reconstruction.
Water supply and sanitation infrastructure worth Rs 1.38 billion was damaged, while irrigation structures worth Rs 1.64 billion were washed away.
The flood also caused an estimated Rs 67.84 billion in damage to private and public houses, schools, health posts and cultural structures. Nearly Rs 100 billion will be required to reconstruct these facilities, according to the assessment.
The total physical damage caused by the flood is estimated at Rs 274.48 billion. An estimated Rs 723.31 billion will be required for reconstruction.
Of the total reconstruction requirement, nearly Rs 9 billion is estimated to be needed for the immediate recovery programme covering the first six months. The remaining amount will be required for long-term recovery, according to the report.
