18 ministries recommended for federal government

Kathmandu, May 31

A committee formed to recommend the structure of central government in the federal structure has recommended that only 18 ministries, besides the Prime Minister’s Office, will be sufficient at the federal level.

The Federal Administrative Restructuring Committee submitted its report to the State Affairs Committee of the Parliament today.

The government on May 4 had formed the committee under the leadership of Minister for General Administration, Keshav Kumar Budhathoki, comprising lawmakers Rajendra Pandey, Arzoo Deuba, Rekha Sharma and Bhuwan Pathak.

The SAC will hold further discussions on the recommendation on Friday.

The constitution says the federal government can include as many as 25 members including state ministers.

According to the recommendation, the federal government should have following ministries:

1. Ministry of Finance and Planning
2. Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration
3. Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs
4. Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply
5. Ministry of Tourism and Culture
6. Ministry of Agriculture, Cooperative and Land Management
7. Ministry of Home Affairs
8. Ministry of Water Resources and Energy
9. Ministry of Foreign Affairs
10. Ministry of Physical Infrastructure, Transport and Civil Aviation
11. Ministry of Defence
12. Ministry of Education and Sports
13. Ministry of Science and Technology
14. Ministry of Women, Inclusion and Social Justice
15. Ministry of Information and Communications
16. Ministry of Health
17. Ministry of Human Resources, Youth, Labour and Employment
18. Ministry of Forest and Environment
