16% rise in suicide cases in Sudurpaschim

The Sudurpaschim province has recorded 551 cases of suicide in the last fiscal year 2019/20. It is a sharp 16 per cent increase from the previous year.

According to the Provincial Police Office, the graph is ascending for the past four years regularly, but this is the biggest increase ever. Only 475 suicide cases, 76 less than the following year, were recorded in the fiscal year 2018/19.

In the year 2019/20, however, 263 women and girls, and 288 men and boys killed themselves, making a total of 551. Of them, 67 are minors, according to SSP Mukesh Kumar Singh.

Hanging has been found the most popular method of self-killing as 413  people, nearly 75 per cent of the total cases, chose this method last year. Likewise, 123 poisoned themselves, nine jumped off, five dived into the water, and one person used arms and weapons.

Districtwise, Kailali tops the chart of nine districts with 223 cases, followed by Kanchanpur (158), and Doti (31).
