114 committed suicide in Sudurpaschim in two months of lockdown

Doti, May 24

Police officials in Sudurpaschim say at least 114 people committed suicide in the province in the past two months since the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak started.

The Provincial Police Office says 58 men and 58 women, including 15 minors (five boys and 10 girls), killed themselves in this period.

SSP Mukesh Bahadur Singh of the PPO says 91 of them killed themselves by hanging. Of 15 minors, 13 chose this method to kill themselves.

Likewise, 19 poisoned themselves, two jumped off cliffs and two jumped into waters.

Singh says the numbers are not unusual as 113 people had committed suicide in the same period last year. Instead, some other provinces have reported an increase, according to him.

The province had recorded 475 suicide cases last fiscal year. As the end of the current fiscal year is around 50 days away, the tally has reached 416.
