More than 30 Kathmandu taxis booked everyday for cheating passengers

Kathmandu, September 9

Traffic police in Kathmandu say they have been booking and taking action against more than 30 taxis almost everyday on the charge of cheating passengers by collecting more money than the standard fare.

SP Raj Kumar Lamsal, spokesperson at the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, says most of the cabs do not give printed bills to their clients after dropping them at the destination. Many of them even do not operate the metre, and bargain for more fare.

“The trend of asking how much they will get from the passengers has not decreased as they do not switch on the metre,” he says, “We have mobilised our personnel in civvies as passengers to find out such taxis.”

“We have launched a campaign against cheating cabbies.”

Members of the public, however, complain that the police initiative has not been much effective, further encouraging the taxi drivers to continue cheating.
