Kathmandu Valley celebrates Ghode Jatra

Kathmandu, April 8

Ghode Jatra festival is celebrated every year on the day of Chaitra Krishna Aunsi. On the occasion of Jatra, the government has declared a public holiday in Kathmandu Valley today.

On the occasion of Jatra, the Nepali Army performs horsemanship, motorcycle games, physical exercises, martial arts, etc. in Tundikhel. In the special ceremony organised by the Nepali Army in Tundikhel, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister and other special personalities will participate.

According to popular belief, a demon named Gurumapa, who lived in a tree in the east-south direction of Tundikhel, used to eat the children of the city. The victimised locals killed it by various means. The fear that the demon’s ghost might wake up again and harm the children remained among the local residents. For this reason, every year on the day of Chaitra Krishna Aunsi, the spirit of Gurumapa is trampled on by a horse.

In addition, food is also given to Gurumapa at the foot of the same tree tonight so that there is no danger to any children in the city. After doing this, the residents of the capital believe that children will not be in danger from Gurumapa throughout the year.
