Design

R15M

When it comes to the design segment, the R15 series has barely disappointed its followers over the years. It is definitely the most iconic bike from Yamaha in Nepal and one of the best bikes that has been around for years. The fourth generation of the R15 series, R15 M is definitely a crowd-pleaser. The bike flaunts a new design, inspired mainly by its elder sibling Yamaha R7.

This is probably the best-looking R15 bike to date. The front of the bike looks slimmer as the company is focused on more aerodynamics design. With new graphics, R15 M also gets a bi-functional LED light at the front and leading LED lights at the side which gives it more of a big bike look. This is also the same class-d bi-functional LED unit seen in Yamaha MT 15. The bike gets a golden colour brake calliper and also the top cap is engraved with R15M branding.

The bike also gets a new advanced fully digital LCD metre console with street view and a dedicated track mode. The street view displays normal contents like speed, trips, mileage and distance covered while the track mode shows information like a lap timer and a tachometer that starts at 6,000 rpm. Meanwhile, the back section of the bike looks similar to its predecessor Yamaha R15 V3.0. Though having similar looks, the air ducts in the new launch are larger; the exhaust muffler also seems different this time around.

Performance

The new R15 M has the same 155cc engine as seen in the previous version of the bike but comes with additional features. The bike only has an electric starter and has a similar powertrain figure to that of the R15 V3 BS6. The 4- stroke, SOHC, 4- valve engine can generate a maximum power of 18.4PS at 10,000 rpm and can generate a maximum torque of 14.2Nm at 7,500 rpm. The bike is mated with a six-speed gearbox and can achieve a top speed of up to approximately 155 km, which is an insane figure for a 155cc bike.

To boost the bike’s performance, Yamaha has included plenty of features on the R15 M. The bike gets Yamaha’s variable valve actuation (VVA) technology. This system provides torque for ease of use at lower RPMs ensuring a good amount of power and torque throughout the entire rev range. The bike also features an assist and slipper clutch to reduce the weight of the clutch pull and provide low-stress shifting during deceleration.

R15 M also features a quick shifter/upshift as standard. This feature allows the user for clutch-less shifting of gears, which means it eliminates the need to use the clutch of throttle before and after a gearshift. The bike is also equipped with a traction control system, which can reduce the chances of a wheel spin or slippage due to the loss of traction.

Safety and other features

R15 M gets disc brakes at both ends. It gets a 282mm disc at the front and a 220mm disc at the back. Along with a dual disc brake, the bike also gets dual-channel ABS for further safety. The assist and slipper clutch on the bike will help to reduce the clutch pull, resulting in low-stress shifting during deceleration. Furthermore, it also prevents excessive engine braking.

The use of technology has made the bike more exciting. The new R15 M features the Y-connect app that displays phone notifications on the instrument cluster screen. Through this, the user will be able to know about calls, SMS, emails, app connectivity status and phone battery level status from the instrumental cluster itself.

With the help of the app, the users will also know about:

  • Fuel consumption tracker
  • Maintenance recommendation
  • Last parking location
  • Malfunction notification
  • Revs dashboard
  • Rankings

The bike features a familiar delta box framing seen on the R15 series and a grey colour aluminium swingarm. R15M is the first bike in the R15 series to finally get upside down (USD) front forks with 37 mm inner tubes. Yamaha claims this setting is great for the sporty handling on twisty roads. The upside-down front forks improve rigidity and provide stability while taking high speed turns or during high braking input. Similarly, it has a kinked-type mono-cross link suspension at the rare end. It runs on 17-inch radial tubeless tyres, the front tyres measure at 100/80-17 while the back measures at 140/70R17.

Notable features on R15 M are:

  • New graphics
  • 3D emblem and special seat
  • Golden colour brake calliper
  • Top cap engraved with R15 M logo
  • Grey colour aluminium swingarm
  • Advanced fully digital LCD metre console
