Writ petition challenges Agni Sapkota’s nomination for speaker

Agni Prasad Sapkota of the Nepal Communist Party waves as the party files his nomination for the position of speaker of the House of Representatives, in Kathmandu, on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.

Kathmandu, January 24

A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court demanding that the court issue an order to halt the election of lawmaker Agni Prasad Sapkota to the position of the speaker in the House of representatives.

The candidate of the ruling Nepal Communist Party is all set to become declared the speaker unopposed. The announcement has been scheduled for Sunday.

Senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, however, moved the apex court today arguing he should not be elected the speaker as he has been accused of murdering Arjun Lama of Kavre district. A case related to this incident is pending at the court.

The petitioner, hence, has demanded that police arrest Sapkota.

Earlier this week, some activists had also staged a demonstration protesting his nomination.
