Wife-killing police officer released without completing even half of sentence

Former Armed Police Force DIG Ranjan Koirala is released from Dillibajaar Jail, on Thursday, July 23, 2020.

Kathmandu, July 23

A former deputy inspector general of the Armed Police Force, Ranjan Koirala, has been released from Dillibajaar Jail of Kathmandu on Thursday. He was imprisoned for murdering his own wife Gita Dhakal in 2012.

Though the Kathmandu District Court had handed down a 20-year jail sentence to him, and the then Appellate Court had upheld it, the Supreme Court recently cut short the sentence to eight and a half years in response to an appeal filed by the convict. The apex court division bench comprising Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Ranan and Justice Tej Bahadur KC had argued that he should be released to take care of his children. However, his children are already in their youth now.

As Koirala came out of the jail this morning, his ‘girlfriend’ Tara Regmi welcomed him.

Regmi, a former national volleyball player, Regmi was also convicted of assisting Koirala for the crime. She has already completed her one-year sentence.
