Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s in Nepal: What do almost identical budget phones offer?

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s, budget offerings from the company, have been officially released in Nepal. Within a short span of time, Vivo has released a number of smartphones on the market; not long ago, it also released its mid-rangers, Vivo V25 and Vivo V25e, here.

The two new releases from the company offer almost the same features, only differentiating in a few aspects. The design, camera performance and battery backup on both phones are identical. But when it comes to performance, they are powered by different chipsets, which affect the performance accordingly.

Design and display

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s share almost similar styling. Both phones come with a glass front, plastic back and a plastic frame build. The phones look similar from all sides and only the graphics differentiate them. On the back of the phone, there is a huge square-shaped camera panel that houses two large camera sensors and an LED flash. Vivo branding at the bottom left corner looks neat as always. Both phones have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Both Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s are IP5X (dust) and IPX4 (water) resistance certified.

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s have a thickness of 8.4mm. While Vivo Y22 weighs around 190 grams, the latter weighs a little heavier at 192 grams. Both phones are available in Starlite blue colours. Vivo Y22 is also available in a unique metaverse green colour option while Vivo Y22s is available in a summer cyan colour option.

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s also have the same display. The 6.55-inch IPS LCD display offers 720*1,612 pixels resolution and 270 PPI density. However, the display on Vivo Y22 only supports a 60Hz refresh rate while the one on Vivo Y22s supports a 90Hz refresh rate. Apart from this, they share similar styling and even have the same amount of screen-to-body ratio.

Another similarity that Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s share is the camera. Both phones have a dual camera setup on the back and a single sensor on the front that is housed inside the waterdrop notch. The 50MP camera on the back is accompanied by a mere 2MP macro sensor and there is an 8MP sensor on the front with an aperture of f/2.0.

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s also share the same camera modes, which include night (front and rear), portrait, photo, video, high resolution, panorama, live photo, slow motion, time-lapse, pro and documents.

For the video, both the front and back cameras are capable of recording 1080p resolution videos at 30fps.

Performance and storage

Both, Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s run on Funtouch OS 12, based on Android 12. The phones should get at least two years of Android updates and at least three years of security patch updates.

The phones are different when it comes to the chipset that powers them. Vivo Y22 is powered by MediaTek Helio G85 (12nm) chipset and the graphics are handled by Mali-G52 MC2. Meanwhile, Vivo Y22s is powered by a more power-efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 4G (6nm) chipset and the graphics are handled by Adreno 610.

Similarly, Vivo Y22 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage while Vivo Y22s comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Both phones have a dedicated card slot to expand the storage by up to 1TB. The phones also offer an extended RAM 3.0 feature, from which they can extract some ROM memory and convert it into RAM memory allowing for a smoother user experience.

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s have multi-turbo 5.5 and ultra game modes, which prioritise the game by optimising power for smoothness and stability.

Battery life, connectivity and others

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s have 5000mAh, non-removable li-ion battery backup. With an 18W fast charger on the board, the battery can get up to 70 per cent charge in 70 minutes, as marketed by the company. Vivo Y22s also feature a reverse charging mode, which is missing in the base Y22 model.

Vivo Y22 and Vivo Y22s have a dual sim-card tray and can support up to 4G networks. They support dual-band wifi and have FM radio as well. Bluetooth 5.0 on phones can be used for wireless pairing with other devices while USB type-C 2.0 can be used for charging as well as for wired pairing. For the audio, both phones offer a loudspeaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Vivo Y22 is priced at Rs 22,999 for the 4/64GB variant while Vivo Y22s is priced at Rs 27,999 for the 6/128GB variant.
