US Embassy hosting hiphop concerts to raise awareness among youth

Kathmandu, January 24

The US Embassy in Kathmandu is organising hiphop-themed musical concerts in Nepalgunj and Kathmandu this week.

‘Youth Voice for the Future’ will take place in Nepalgunj on Friday and Kathmandu on Saturday. The concert is being organised to raise awareness about various issues concerning the youth and to give people a platform to express themselves, the Embassy informs.

Hiphop is a popular art form among Nepali youth, but only a few know about its history of encouraging social and political expression and change in the United States, the Embassy says.

Following last year’s successful local and national elections and Nepal’s current transition to federalism, the US Embassy is bringing back American hiphop artist Aisha Fukishima to highlight the important role musical expression and youth inclusion play in giving voice to the minority.

Fukishima is a singer, speaker, education and a rap activist (RAPvist)and she was in Nepal in 2016 too. She will lead workshops and presentations focusing on Rap Activism (RAPtivism), and encourage the youth to participate more, according to the Embassy.

She will be joined by popular Nepali artists like Deepak Bajracharya, Laure, Nepal Hiphop Foundation, Cartoonz Crew, Sugam Pokharel and many more.
