The CPN-UML on Monday has called a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee for Tuesday to discuss selection of its candidates for chief ministers for four provinces.

Just on Sunday, the UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre had agreed that the UML will lead four provincial governments while the Maoist Centre will lead two others. The two parties’ left alliance holds majority in six of seven provinces and are certain to form join governments there.

According to the agreement, the UML will lead governments in provinces 1, 3, 4 and 5.

UML Central Office Secretary Krishna Gopal Shrestha says the meeting will begin at 10 am tomorrow.

According to the party’s Secretary Pradeep Gyawali, the meeting will formulate a procedure to pick candidates for chief ministers. He says provincial parliamentary party leader in the respective province will lead the government.

At first, attempts will be made to pick the leaders in consensus and if that is not possible, elections will be held to elect parliamentary party leaders, according to him.

So far, Bhim Acharya and Sherdhan Rai have claimed the chief minister’s position in Province 1. Ashta Laxmi Shakya and Rajendra Pandey in Province 3, Prithvi Subba Gurung and Kiran Gurung in Province 4 and Shankar Pokhrel in Province 5 have been claiming the positions.
