Thapaliya named new Election Commission chief

Kathmandu, March 25

The Constitutional Council has nominated Dinesh Thapaliya for Chief Election Commissioner, a day after the post fell vacant.

Thapaliaya, who is the incumbent secretary at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, was named for the position by a meeting of the council on Monday.

The council’s meeting was organised a day after CEC Ayodhee Prasad Yadav and Commissioner Ila Sharma retired from their positions on Sunday. The government, however, has not named Sharma’s replacement.

Meanwhile, the council has nominated Bisnu Maya Ojha for Chief Commissioner of Commission for Inclusion.

The day’s meeting took place in the absence of Opposition Leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, who wrote to the commission that he would not be able to be present at the meeting, National Assembly Chairman and council member Ganesh Timalsena.
