Ten minutes in the Life of Sparrows

Nepali Congress’ 13th general convention ended last week with Sher Bahadur Deuba being elected the new president in the second round of voting. Photos of the election showing voters queening up, and leaders asking for votes were splashed all over the media.

While covering the election, this photo journalist, got to cover another story. The story of  sparrows that live around the City Hall in Kathmandu.

As voting was drawing to a close, the only thought on my mind was that of food. Soon I found out that I was not the only one thinking along those lines.

The green area outside the main hall has lot of shrubs. The area is well-light, and that means butterflies are attracted to the lights. But unfortunately, they get trapped in the bushes, and it only took little time for the sparrows to take notice.

Then came the other sparrows. They realised that lunch was being served. I stood nearby taking photos of them, and for a moment forgot about my own hunger.

While some sparrows were still looking for butterflies, this one took off with its kill for the day. Maybe there is a family that’s waiting for food.

Some of the sparrows were not so lucky. The latecomers to the party found that the early birds had already taken away most of the food.

But this is life. There is competition everywhere. Then I realised, it was late, and food was waiting.
