India has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for up to 18 hours a day from September 13 to December 31.
The Indian Ministry of Power has authorised the export of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority through the 400 kV Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar double-circuit line and the 132 kV Tanakpur-Mahendranagar single-circuit line.
Under the approval, up to 600 MW can be exported through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar line, allowing Nepal to import up to 654 MW of electricity from India.
The approval covers an 18-hour period from midnight to 6 pm daily. The Indian Ministry of Power said the amount of electricity Nepal will require from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026.
Nepal’s electricity generation has declined following extensive damage to hydropower infrastructure caused by recent floods and landslides, creating a need for additional power to meet domestic demand.
The Indian ministry said the export approval was granted considering the damage to Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure caused by the floods and their impact on domestic electricity generation.
The approval is expected to help Nepal manage its electricity demand during the flood-affected period and further strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries.
