Supreme Court upholds EC decision to conduct re-polling in Bharatpur

Kathmandu, July 30

Nepal’s Supreme Court has upheld the Election Commission’s decision to conduct re-polling in the local elections in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, where then Prime Minister Prachanda’s daughter is in the race to become mayor.

A bench of justices Om Prakash Mishra and Purushottam Bhandari ordered re-polling in Ward 19 of the Metropolis, exactly two months after counting of votes was put off after a Maoist cadre allegedly tore ballot papers yet to be counted.

CPN Maoist Centre’s Renu Dahal and UML’s Devi Gyawali are in dead heat in the race to become mayor.

The court was responding to a writ filed by the UML demanding that the SC scrap a decision by the Election Commission to conduct re-polling. The court had earlier issued a stay on the commission’s decision.
